What is Colorguard/Winterguard?

The history:

Colorguard originated in the English military when soldiers were accompanied by drummers and pipers to keep them together in step, as well as a soldier with flags to display their colors. Soon this developed into a small group of soldiers carrying displaying their colored flags along with the other soldiers still carrying their weapons (rifles and sabres). As it spread to the United States, the US military would display their rifle skills and colorful flags while shouting battle cries to show their pride.

Eventually, colorguard developed into a group with flags, rifles, and sabres performing to the music from a marching band. Despite this change, the purpose of colorguard remains the same: to create a showcase for our pride.

The difference:

The difference between colorguard and winterguard is the seasons. Winterguard, sometimes referred to as winter colorguard, takes place indoors during the Winter season and is performed to pre-recorded music. The genres of shows and music can be anywhere from rock to classical to popular music and anything in between. Winterguards can be either scholastic or independent. Colorguard, on the other hand, takes place during the Fall and is accompanied by a marching band, almost always representing a school. They can perform during their school's football game halftime shows but still participate in regional and national competitions.
